Age of Fantasy: Warhammer with the kid

My kid loves miniatures, and over the last couple of years, he's gotten a lot of 40k miniatures. He's also picked up some board games just for the miniatures inside. I always make sure to offer the family gift suggestions for birthdays and Christmas.

There are still so many more miniatures to get, and I’ve been buying second-hand stuff for him. For his last birthday, he wanted Orcs, Goblins, and Lizardmen.

I love it! I prefer fantasy over sci-fi. Before our recent move, I sold most of my collection—even the painted stuff. I only kept generic fantasy models and my finished painted miniatures. Everything else is gone.

We're going to play One Page Rules, for the simplicity (and because it's free). We looked through the miniatures he got for his birthday and made a 500-point list. I'm turning some of the Normans I bought for the Viking Mega Game into a Bretonnian force. I don’t plan on spending any money, so I’ll just use what I have in my bit box.

The plan is to paint our two 500-point forces, and then expand them to 750 and later 1000 points—to play with fully painted armies.

The Orcs

Here’s the list we made for the kid: 20 orc infantry, 10 bowmen, 5 black orcs, and a boss on a boar (fighting alongside the black orcs). We've built the appropriate command group miniatures where needed.

Not much conversion going on here. The boss has a plastic arm, since the original was missing—attached with greenstuff and super glue. One banner bearer has a big orc warrior bit (a huge cow skull) added to the otherwise plain metal banner with heads—also attached with greenstuff and glue.

Other than that, the miniatures are standard.

The Bretonnians

My list is: 5 knights errant, 20 men-at-arms, a hero knight, and 10 bowmen. I still need to build the bowmen.

The knights are straight-up Normans with no real conversions. I found a flag in the bit box for the banner bearer. The champion got a cape to stand out, and the musician has a horn from a Chaos Marauder.

The men-at-arms are not converted. The command group has a hornblower (a Viking horn bit), a champion with a cape and a Knights of the White Wolf hammer. The banner is made using a High Elf bit on a pike.

The hero is a knight with an added cape and a feather in his helmet. He also has a flag on the lance. All heroes will have capes and feathers. Champions will just have capes. It's an easy way to differentiate the miniatures.

Inq28 - Inquisitor Warband - WIP

I don't play Warhammer 40k, Killteam or Necromunda. I do however love inquisitors and their warbands. I've been wanted some team for years. This Ordo Heriticus inquisitor is made on the basis of a Dungeons and Laser witchhunter model with some easy conversion bits.

He's a bit small in scale, but paint will hide much of such a scale difference.

His Interogator is made from a Dunkeldorf miniature. Had to do a bit of cutting in the metal, as it's a monopose cast miniature. But it wasn't too hard to add an archaic looking las pistol and deathly token in her other hand. The inqusitorial symbol fit nicely as a pendant around the neck.

Redemptionists are wicked awesome. I have some unbuild for Necromunda. I 've been using old warhammer flaggelant bodies, random 40k arms and cultist heads from frostgrave. This is why I love plastic! Redemptionists and flames goes hand in hand. So this guy has a flamer.

Same base. Flaggelant and cultist head. Then kitbashed a bit chainsword for this guy.

This redemtionist is based on a dunkeldorf female flaggelant miniature. Only took a few bits to make a perfect redemptionist.

Ministorum Priest. Makes sense that an Ordo Hereticus inquisitor is being followed around by a priest and his acolyte. These are also the guys who's brough in the redemptionists.

One guy is an old Forge World Empire Warrior priest. The other guy is an actual 40k miniature, that was lacking his weapons.

Crusader. This is build on an old void plastic miniature (a freebie with some order one time). The shield is a square riot shield longed with an old empire shied. I added a resin cape from Anvil Industries. The head is an empire head I think, from the old state troopers.

This pilot is from the old assault on black reach kit. An ansolutely amazing core box with great terrain and miniatures. I not really done anything other than small greenstuff work on his ammo case, turning it into a medpack. This is the team medic.

Adeptus Arbities. I've read Eisenhorn a lot of times. This model was started way before Necromunda was rebooted and there came great arbites there. Some void model as the crusader, perry miniatures medieval head and a combat shotgun.

The powermaul is kitbashed from random bit box bits.

Truescale Deathwatch marine. This is not intended to be a primaris marines. Made him deathwatch with a shoulder pad, had some resin candles from anvil industries. Candles on your power backpack? Why? Because it's awesome and grimdark.

The head was chosen because it's cool with targetting system.

The cherubs are from some old devastator squad. They're carrying a melta bomb normally. I've just made them carry some cool symbols, changed the wings on one cherub to make the different.

Arco-flaggelants. Condemned heretics. These are made from GW ghould bodies, greenstuff wires and various flail bits. Fairly simple conversions.

And the entire Inqusitorial Warband ready for paint.

The Glottkin

My kid has always been allowed to play with my miniatures. They see way more use that way and they're easy to fix. Most of my collection is plastics anyway and they're all good.

Obviously my kids love big guys and he's a fan of Nurgle (I painted a small Death Guard force back in the day). For yule he really wanted the Glottkin, but had no interest in the riders on top (great for me, I love those two dudes). I found this miniature used, for very cheap. It was already basecoated, so I just went amok with a bunch of speed paint.

After speed painting I added a lot of slime and blood effects, I also added lots of gloss varnish, to make him kind of shiney.

Easy enough paint job and he's good an gross - he's eaten a lot of imperial knights.
