I love collecting, painting, converting and scratch building terrain. I even get to play a game once in a while. I'm a big fan of gamification as part of teaching - I'm an elementary school teacher.
This blog covers my hobby work and 'teaching through gaming'.
For the game Guilders: A Life In Shadows there's a few scenarios, that require play inside buildings. I've covered the build of this huge tavern, based on a TTCombat Carnevale set before in this blog. And covering some of the bits and bobs painted for the interior in this blog.
Now the entire thing is completed. Take a small trip through the build in this little video and read on for some words on how it's done. Most of the miniatures in there are from Dunkeldorf.
I 3d printed some flat doors found on thingiverse. Some of the prints failed, but since I don't like throwing suff out, it was easily fixed with some coffee stirrers.
I've printed out some floor details, found online somewhere. I printed them on a3 paper, so they fit an entire floor with having to make some funky line-ups.
I also found a bunch of pictures of carpets online, printed them out and glued them in place here and there.
For the stairs, I printed some I also found online, and to save space on the top floor I simply added a wooden trapdoor in the floor, that saved me from cutting actual holes in the terrain - that would serve no practical purpose anyway.
The walls are painted an off white that I mixed with cheap acryllics. It's painted on with a sponge, it adds a bit of a textured detail with the MDF shining through here and there.
I added rooms to the floors using thick cardboard. The doors don't open, but that's not really a problem during gameplay. The wooden beans are used coffee stirrers glued in place, but they really break up that MDF look nicely.
Normally I've been opposed to gluing terrain in place inside buildings, not wanting to 'waste' painted interior. But these days, I glue terrain inside. It's just easier and with 3d printing and a ton of terrain crate - I'll never run out anyways.
The top floor is a large suite, added some nicer looking interior details up here. Some a Dunkeldorf bits, some are from Mantic games.
Full topdown look on the 1st floor, with two small common room and one room that's a bit more exclusive.
This is the top floor suite, with one large room and a seperate sleeping chamber.
If you like my stuff, please consider following some of the SoMe pages, it'll all help once Guilders is released and goign into sale. You can also pop into the Discord, it's a very good little community of supportive hobby people. It's all found through my LinkTree.
At work (at an elementary school) I've gotten to teach "Design and Crafts" and the school bought a couple of 3d printers. I've thrown a lot of freebie hours into learning how that stuff works and as part of the process I've printed up a Warhound Titan for my kid. He really wanted one for christmas. It was a nice project and good learning experience.
My kid chose the colors for the titan. It's was base coated black, painted with regular acrylics and a ton of different washes. All the color trimmings were done with markers / felt pens, it worked allright but still needed a gold drybrush.
There was no instruction to the ~100 parts, some of them pretty small. And I mistankly put the legs on backwards without noticing. Only when getting to the shin guards I remembered 'wooops, they have those weird reverrse legs'. Anyway - works well enought and it still a big stompy robot.
I'm currently building all manner of 40k themed stuff. really into some inq28 looking types, it's nice kitbashing and will be entered into a community challenge on the Discord - why not come join it?
Time for some more Sludge. For Sludge I got myself one box of Wargames Atlantic french ww1 troops, because it had so many masked heads. I also got a buch of Napoleonics (for hats) and Perry knights for armor.
Shock Troopers
Shock Troopers are cool elite troops. They don't have bayonettes, they have melee weapons for storming trenches and can equip greanades. I decided to give them bear skin hats (and masks) to show their elite status.
They have more armor than regular line infantry. I used Perry knight bodies (armor on torso and legs), but used a knife to could the leg armor into pants. The shock troopers are not fully armored.
I assebled them with a mix of close combat weapons and carbine rifles. They carry the other set as gear.
Cloaks added as on all the army with toilet paper / super glue.
For story in the army, I've made sergeants on the command bases for the Line Infantry. These guys have the same gear as the Shock Troopers, to show that these can be put in command of line infantry. I used the ww1 frech sergent bodies for these (same defence as line infantry, so no armor plating on these).
I made the hats/helmets/masks. Cut the helmet part of the ww1 head (so only the mask and brim remain). Cut face of a french napoleon soldier. Glue together.
I went with the same color scheme for these. Yellow, grey, black, red. Heavy wash and drybrush. So all seems dirty, dusty, muddy.
Artillery
I was gifted two cool little pieces of cannon. 3d resin prints, but not fitting the style of the first guy who got them. So they were passed to me. I made the crew from bits I had. Some ww1 sergeant bodies, some napoleonic bodies (the command frame had a carpenter in apron). Found some suitable bits in the bit box. Small axes, hammers, torch, made that 'clean the cannon' thing from a spear and a bit of greenstuff. Made cannon balls with green stuff and did some hand switching.
The metal masks, whatever they are, are also from the ww1 french. Don't know what it's meant to be. Haven't seen them in real life.
Show some love
If you want to try Sludge, then go and check it out from Wargames Vault. Blaster also contains all manner of other cool stuff.
I post lots of miniature stuff on different platforms (and use them differently), so go drop some likes and follows through Link Tree.
Here's an executioner 3d printed by a friend. I had this printed up while waiting on the Dungeons and Lasers 3 to deliver (that also has a cool executioner in it).
There's a scenario in Guilder: A Life In Shadows where the guilds try to rescue a condemned from the gallows. I added small blue details to the executioner, so there's a small tie in with the guards of my city.
Gallows
This is a 3d resin print. There was a bit of warping in the platform and at the top beam. It was a really easy fix with a bit of greenstuff. The paintjob was a quick base coat, wash, drybrush. I added a bunch of wanted posters to the gallows as detailing and a bit of blood - this is also used as a scaffold for beheadings.
Thanks for reading people.
As always make sure to follow some different SoMe. I use all the platforms differently. And if you like a great forumstyled community, come check out the Discord. Best hobby people around are in there. It's a very nice place.
Wagons add a lot of life to a any fantasy board - be it city of farmstead. I want to have lots of wagons and carts parked around my fantasy city when it's all done.
I also want some colors on as much of my city as possible. So my wagons will all have some colors, besides just brown wood. First up is a nice big Reaper Bones wagon. It's a good chunky terrain, with room for miniatures in the back.
I've painted it wooden brown, red outside with green wheels. The straw in the back is just yellow static grass added with a tiny bit of super glue. This is a really playable piece, adding height and cover for games.
The farmer is a straight up Fireforge Miniatures angry peasant. A great kit for making a bunch of civilians for a game like Guilders: A Life In Shadows.
The second is a carriage 3d printed by a friend. I found this one on thingeverse - it also has a detailed interior - but I haven't done anything for that. The inside will never really be used in my games anyway.
There's a heist in Guilders named 'The Carriage', where that's the target. So I wanted on what was a bit more than a peasents wagon. I've painted it in the same colors as I've done my city guard - so it'll fit well with the city's king or nobles.
For this build, it was the first time for my trying the speed paitn white - which I could not make work in any way. It just turned out grey for me. ... so in the end I ended up drybrushing whie on the roof. Will have to see if there's any tips for making the white speed paint work, I like speed paint for terrain.
I will need to fix up some pole thing for pulling the cart and paint up a couple of horses for it. That comes later at some point.

Over on the Discord we have something called "Pledge, Paint or Pay". Where members make themselves a hobby pledge and a forfeit fee, should they fail. It's all for motivation and good fun. One of the members, the excellent Lars G, lost a pledge and decided to paint a warband for someone.
Besides wishing for a guild, I left it completely up to Lars what to do. He set himself the challenge of include different fantasy races and use different skin tones on all miniatures.
I've very happy to own this guild, great miniatures. They have a lot of character and Lars paints in some very nice bright colors.
This guild I've since given stats and use for intro games for Guilders.
The game is miniatures agnostic, you can use any miniatures you find fitting for the setting. And there is a lot of guilder profiles available.
This miniatures I run as an orc thief, a drow thief and an enforcer. I simply love the guy in the middle, it's such a damn cool pose.
Here's a halfling thief, a human street urchin, gnome charlatan and a steet urchin tiefling. I do like the Warcraftesque colors and look on these guys. That green hair on the gnome is brilliant.
Here's the Guild Master for the guild. Obviously have excellent thoughts about himself wearing a crown and all. The golem type is run as a thug or bruiser.
Lastly is a huge thug, a really nasty type of person and a halfling acrobat. I love how the acrobat is wearing a squirrel on the hood.

I had a good friend (an original member of the Discord) print me some miniatures, back when I started doing Guilders. These days, I've gotten a ton of minis from kickstarters - but still want to paint up these 3d prints. This guy is an elf emmisary from a court collection. I've painted him up as a guard captain. He'll both work in Oathmark as a leader and an encounter in Guilders. One of the complications for Heists is feautering a guard captain.
Next up is a couple of jesters and a bard. The two jester miniatures are 3d printed and the bard is a Ronnie the Bard. That miniature is from Mantic Games - I have no idea where I got him from. Some kickstarter I recon.
Since there's three civillians on a crowd base in guilders, these three can go together. There's also a complication where two bards are placed on the board at the start. These could also work for that. And the scenario Masked Masses - a carnival scenario.
