Terrain: Wizard Study

After finishing some of my dungeon tiles, I had to get ready for some Rangers of Shadow Deep. For that I needed a wizards study. In the RoSD scenario it's actually a shamans workshop, but potato-tomato.

I you want to check out all the dungeon build videos and articles, jump over to the dungeon hub

There's a ton of different pieces from the Terrain Crate kickstarter. I've painted a fireplace, the astronomy thing and candle lights. The lectern is from Dungeon Saga and the book is from an old GW dwarf banner.

The mirror was kind of hard to paint up, I don't know to paint a flat surface like that. But it works okay. This is a small metal lectern from an unknown place and the tablet is from Admiralty Miniatures.

I've glued a lot of scatter pieces to the desk. Feather pen and lamp are from Admiralty Miniatures, the other stuff is Terrain Crate.

The book cases are terrain crate as well. I've just added som small scatter pieces to the top. I want to add scatter on top of all pieces like this. All my cabinets at home look like that, and it makes for a better look 'top-down', from where we play.

The small scatter pieces are made to be added and removed depending on need. I've just glued them in place.

Terrain: Torture Chamber

After finishing some of my dungeon tiles, I had to get ready for some Rangers of Shadow Deep. For that I needed a torture chamber.

I you want to check out all the dungeon build videos and articles, jump over to the dungeon hub

Torture Chamber

I went into the garage and dug out all manner of bit from my 'terrain crate' box - also having other kinds of bits. I gave a good amount of different torture chamber bits to use. Let's check them out.

A necromancer and a guard working at a table. Took one of my terrain crate tables and added bits from the bits box. A hand from a zombie kit, a bunch of knives from somewhere. There's a bag with a hand (think it's from FG cultists or Mantic zombies). Also used the doctors bag from Dunkeldorf and added a small candle, don't know where that is from.

A couple of reaper bones bits I got donated. Added a renedra base to the coal basket. The faun is from Admiralty Miniatures.

An old HeroQuest bench, a prisoner from Terrain Crate and a Reaper Bones iron maiden.

A couple more pieces from Reaper Bones. Painted up the bear trap to work in the torture chamber as well. The dwarven prisoner is from Admiralty Miniatures.

For this torture chamber and prison setup, I still need to build some cages. I think I'll be doing one and casting it a couple of times with plaster.

Ghost Archipelago: Objectives

I love making treasure tokens! And I've made both frozen versions, dungeon versions and now for Ghost Archipelago.

I've had some nice resin and metal bits from Admiralty Miniatures for some time, decided to use those. The look sufficiently Indiana Jones for this game.

To bring out the pieces, I've put them all standing on a small rock. Adds some nice weight to the counter and makes them more visible. 'Who would leave their treasure on a rock?' - well.... Who would leave it one the floor of a jungle?

Besides the small treasure pieces, i've added finger nail gems and gold glitter.

A goblet of gold, coins and gems.

A crystal ball.

Two small god statues. A male and female god - the male one is probably a Chaos Dwarf icon.

A globe and a telescope - this is my favorite treasure tokens. It's just so fitting for a pirate crew to find something like this.

A bronze vase and some other treasure pieces.

A captains log, hopefully it contains clues to where one can find the Crystal Pool.

A small counter for the 'x marks the spot' scenario. Added a shovel and pick axe from Mantic's terrain crate, a skull and some recently dug earth.

Saurian eggs. These are simple, cheap polystyrene eggs found on ebay. They had a single layer of brown wash, to tone down the white. Super quick and very easy pieces to do. Used for the 'saurian breakfast' scenario.

Rangers of Shadow Deep: First Ranger and Warband

Finished my first band of warriors for Rangers of Shadow Deep. This was a nice warband to build and paint, good models from different places.

I plan of starting getting through RoSD in 2020, just need to finish a few bits for the first couple of scenarios.

My ranger have spend some of her starting points, to buy more soldiers for the warband - strength in numbers I think.

My ranger is Haelga (middle model). She's a ranger from the South of Alladore. She's been working as a city guard captain in a medium sized town. After the appereance of the Shadow Deep, she's left the rather boring position and started out as a ranger again.

I've painted the Star of Alladore on her breastplate. The bow and quiver is a bit added from the bit box. I used thin paper strips to make the strap for it - actually it's three small pieces, because here braid and arm was in the way.

Next up i Bertha, who worked as a rat catcher in the town Haelga was captain in. Bertha didn't much enjoy her work and really wanted to get out, so when a chance to enlist as a ranger companion arose, she took it.

The shield I've added to the model myself and the halberd is an addition as well.

Last is Wurt, a wood cutter by trade. His now drafted as a ranger recruit for the warband. As Wurt already knows his way around a forest, is fit and strong - he was a perfect candidate to maybe become a ranger.

All three models are from Dunkeldorf Miniatures by King Games.

Next up in the warband is a couple of city guard archers, Pine and Bee. These guys are used to sitting in a tower or watching a gate - an easy and comfortable job. They didn't get a choice, and watching a peaceful town gate is not going to cut it in a time of crises.

Both models are unconverted Oathmark humans from Northstar Military Figures.

From the region where Haelgo was born and raised comes a couple of warriors for her expedition. Sveinur and Holgir are both experienced soldiers from the kings army. Haelga knows both men from her earlier ranger days, before she joined the city guard.

After a bit of (mostly for the principle) haggling back and forth, Sverinur and Holgir joined her warband.

Last in the crew is Topper, a halfling chef, thief, tavern regular and occitional sling competition partioner. Topper is acutally in the crew an indentured servant to Haelga - looking at some bad prison time after a poor job. Looking to get back into the fresh air, he agreed to help Haelga with some lock picking - hopefully at not too much risk to his life.

Terrain: Renedra Huts and obectives

Renedra is making really cheap hard plastic huts. They make different styles, but I've picked up the timber ones, as I thought them to have the best texture on the surface. The huts are so cheap and sturdy, that I didn't want to bother making scratch build ones. The roof can be taken off for indoor objective placement - but there's no detail on the inside.

The paint job is a fast different brown base coats, with a quick drybrush and a heavy layers of Army Painter quick shade varnish.

I've chosen to glue my huts to some small bases, for a better a finish. Used some of my forest sprinkle mix on the outside, and added sand to the inside of the huts.

I really hope Renedra bring out more dirt cheap kits like this, that would be awesome. And these small huts will be used for tribals in Ghost Archipelago, in Burrows and Badgers, Vanguard and Rangers of Shadowdeep. So many games to drop them into.

A small village ready for any classic fantasy setting.

As a small tribal jungle village in Ghost Archipelago.

And a small Mantic damsel in distress, captured by some brutal feral orcs. The orc slave heads is a nice kit from Admiralty Miniatures that fit well on Games Workshop savage orc (or whatever they're called these days).

This is the first part of the Mantic Terrain Crate kickstarter I've painted. Up until now it's only been sitting in a box. But I'm getting ready for soem solo fantasy games, so better get to work on it.

I think this bonfire, the 'witch' and the bonfire is actually from the Vanguard kickstarter, that also came with some very nice terrain crate pieces for objectives.

Roman RISK: First castings of the ships

Ramshackle Games have gotten the ships sculpted by Admiralty Miniatures. The ships have been now been cast in resin. I've just gotten the first examples in hand and they are bloody lovely models.

Green stuff wizards are what they are! Forming a green blob into something like this - amazing.

Roman RISK: Greenstuff Models

I've had an idea to make some cool boardgame tokens besides the 1:72 romans.

My good friend Mathias Rizell from Admiralty Miniatures (Facebook or Etsy) have helped sculpting two ships for the game. A big 6cm one and a smaller 3cm one. Absolutely stellar work.

Curtis Fell from Ramshackle Games will help and see if the models can get cast in resin and in bulk numbers.

Check out all Roman RISK posts.

Testudo
The idea for the testudo model is to count as 5+ armies. Will add a small plastic piece to the base, and you can white board marker write the number of infantry it represents. Students have a tendency to mass giant armies on a few key territories.

The model is single piece, sculpted in green stuff. It's made to fit the size of 1:72 models. I'm not a great sculptor, but the result is decent. Some heavy wash and flock to hide the feet will make it pop alright.

A quick spray in team color, then pick out the shield center in metal.

Front
 Side
 Rear

Onager (catapult)
A powerfil d10 / d6 unit in the game. It's expensive, but good if you bring a Legatus as well. The onager is made to fit scale 1:72. It's made by matches and greenstuff. The front is made solid with putty filling, so it's possible to make a one piece cast of it.

Temple
The temple is a territory upgrade. Building a temple on a territory will make it worth 1 more point. Temples cost 10 denarii to build and invading armies have the choice of keeping them - or pillage/destroy them for a 5 denarii return.

The base is made from plastic card, the center is a toy plastic block, the pillars are BBQ sticks and the roof is bend plasticcard.

Fort
The fort is a territory upgrade. It'll let regular legionnaire infantry defende with a d8 (over a d6) on that territory. There's plenty of territories on the map, where building a fort can defend massive land areas.

Made from green stuff and toothpicks. This might be a challenge to cast, so maybe the walls and towers will have to be cut down short. The proportions would also be better if this was done. But that will be up to Ramshackle Games.

Ships
Mathias is a green stuff wizard! It's absolutely amazing the amount of details he's able to make on something that small. I'm so grateful for his help and time - absolutely priceless.

The small one is a Liburnian Ship (patrol ship). The large is a Quinquireme.

Frostgrave: Goblin Thief and Chaos Dwarf Barbarian

A couple more models for my growing warband of Chaos Dwarfs. The barbarian is a model from The Russian Alternative and the goblin is from Zealot Miniatures and sculpted by my good friend Matte (of Admiralty Miniatures).

For the barbarian I've kept the colours in the same style as the other warband members. Different reds and grey beard/hair).

The Warband
My Chaos Dwarf warband is becoming rather large and I should really get them on the table. I think, I'll be running these guys as a Summoner warband - having some demons around fit the theme.

Mass Effect: Commander Shephard and his team

Ever since I played through the Mass Effect games, I've wanted to make my favourite characters as models. There's a few different sets available from Shapeways - but with sufficient detail they are pretty expensive.

I once asked my good mate Matte from Admiralty Miniatures, if I could commission him to make some heads. He ended up making a set, have them cast and them put up for sale.

This was a nice project of mixing and matching different bits and only using a bit of greenstuff, to add a bit of extra detail. There's photos of the finished and painted models at the buttom of this blogpost.

Urdnot Wrex, the Grogan: Mantic Enforcer arms, on a Peace Keeper body. Chopped up the foot to make the toes look right. Added some greenstuff details to give him the right shape on the back. Pistol from enforcer sprue as well.

Mordin Solus, the Salarian: For the body I've used an old restic Wrath model (from Deadzone), added some pouches from the Warlord Games zombie survivor kit. The omnitool is from a Dreadball female human and the pistol is from the enforcers. I added some shoulder pads from greenstuff, as there was some holes in the arms (for some fabric on the Wrath model). The 'claw' on his neck is from a Dreadball robot.

Garrus Vakarian, the Turian: A mantic enforcver model. I've cut the feet, to make them look like a turian. The spikes behind the knees are plastic sprue cut into shape. And to get the right shape on the armor, I've added some simple greenstuff details.

Thane Krios (drell), Tali'Zorah (qurian), Ashley Williams (human):
Thane is made from a Games Workshop dark eldar wytch, where I've cut off all the spikes. The gun arm is from a Mantic enforcer and the sniper is made from various gun bits.

Tali is also a dark eldar wytch. Her omni-tool is made from a Thermal Mine (enforcer) and the submachine gun is a cut up pathfinder tag rifle. I've also given her some utility pouches from the Warlord Games zombie survivors.

Ashleys is an almost vanilla Dreadball femail Void Sirene with an enforcer pistol hand added. I've repose her right arm with some hot water, as it was raised in the air before.

Urdnot Wrex (grodan), Commander Shephard (human), Legion (geth):
The Commander Shephard model is from Brother Vinnis. The only thing I've done with it, is to add a pistol to his back.

Legion is a Dreadball MVP model, perfect model for legion. I've reposed his arms with hot water and added a sniper rifle from the Enforcer Pathfinder sprue.

Garrus Vakarian (turian), Mordin Solus (salarian), Liara T'Soni (asari):
The model I've used for Liara is a cheap resin copy of an Infinity model. Found it on Ebay, not knowing it was a recast or an infinity model. But it has a nice pose. Model came with a sword, that I haven't used.

Painted strike team
For colours I've gone for a look as close to the colours used in the game (if not changed the standards).

I don't really know in which game these guys will see action. Perhaps in Star Saga with help from the Character Creation Expansion, maybe in a game of Scrappers as a scavenger team (using the aliens as mutants). They could also work well with Rogue Stars.

I think they can be run in Deadzone as well, as a reb team. Using Wrex as a Teraton, Mordin as a Judwan Medic, Legion and Thane as Reb Snipers.
