Terrain: Armory

After finishing some of my dungeon tiles, I had to get ready for some Rangers of Shadow Deep. For that I needed an armory. And Perilous Dark from Frostgrave takes part in a weapons factory.

I you want to check out all the dungeon build videos and articles, jump over to the dungeon hub

The armory

Again jumping into the box of fantasy terrain crate, heroquest and dungeon saga.

The terrain crate weapons racks are really annoying bits. They are all warped all over the place. And even using hot water and adding bases to them, the pole arms are all over the place. I much prefer the old HeroQuest weapon rack.

But there is three weapon racks from the kickstarter, that's a nice amount. I've made sure to paint of the shields in different colors, to add some difference to them. There's also a weapon cache, I think that one is from Kow: Vanguard.

For the armory I've also painted up a barrel of explosives and a grinding stone. Looking forward to doing some black smith stuff. I have a furnace and such around somewhere.

The pile of armor and weapons are from the treasure room terrain crate. The other piles are made from different pieces from the collection. The crates and barrels are from renedra, hobby stores and some resin pieces I don't know where I got from. I've just added weapon bits from the bit box to make them into armory bits.

Terrain: Wizard Study

After finishing some of my dungeon tiles, I had to get ready for some Rangers of Shadow Deep. For that I needed a wizards study. In the RoSD scenario it's actually a shamans workshop, but potato-tomato.

I you want to check out all the dungeon build videos and articles, jump over to the dungeon hub

There's a ton of different pieces from the Terrain Crate kickstarter. I've painted a fireplace, the astronomy thing and candle lights. The lectern is from Dungeon Saga and the book is from an old GW dwarf banner.

The mirror was kind of hard to paint up, I don't know to paint a flat surface like that. But it works okay. This is a small metal lectern from an unknown place and the tablet is from Admiralty Miniatures.

I've glued a lot of scatter pieces to the desk. Feather pen and lamp are from Admiralty Miniatures, the other stuff is Terrain Crate.

The book cases are terrain crate as well. I've just added som small scatter pieces to the top. I want to add scatter on top of all pieces like this. All my cabinets at home look like that, and it makes for a better look 'top-down', from where we play.

The small scatter pieces are made to be added and removed depending on need. I've just glued them in place.

Terrain: Torture Chamber

After finishing some of my dungeon tiles, I had to get ready for some Rangers of Shadow Deep. For that I needed a torture chamber.

I you want to check out all the dungeon build videos and articles, jump over to the dungeon hub

Torture Chamber

I went into the garage and dug out all manner of bit from my 'terrain crate' box - also having other kinds of bits. I gave a good amount of different torture chamber bits to use. Let's check them out.

A necromancer and a guard working at a table. Took one of my terrain crate tables and added bits from the bits box. A hand from a zombie kit, a bunch of knives from somewhere. There's a bag with a hand (think it's from FG cultists or Mantic zombies). Also used the doctors bag from Dunkeldorf and added a small candle, don't know where that is from.

A couple of reaper bones bits I got donated. Added a renedra base to the coal basket. The faun is from Admiralty Miniatures.

An old HeroQuest bench, a prisoner from Terrain Crate and a Reaper Bones iron maiden.

A couple more pieces from Reaper Bones. Painted up the bear trap to work in the torture chamber as well. The dwarven prisoner is from Admiralty Miniatures.

For this torture chamber and prison setup, I still need to build some cages. I think I'll be doing one and casting it a couple of times with plaster.

Dungeon: Tile 4 and base colors

I've made some more good progress on my modular dungeon board. I've finished up the fourth corner tile and designed them all to make a connected 2'x2' board.

Tile four
From the top this tile looks a lot like tile 3, with to large rooms and a corridor. But the placement of the entrances and doors make it different anyway.

Also for this board I made archways at the connector points, an upgrade from the first two tile (had none) and the third (square, straight beam).

Painting the base colors

Base colors on the dungeon board are almost done. First I made a grey mix, using a full tube of white acryllic and black, pva glue and sand measured with a spoon. I want to make the same kind of grey if needed for the other boards - if I run out.

I made a darker grey for the floor in all the corridor areas. So however the tiles are lined up next to each other, the corridors will fit together nicely.

Then at least one room on every tile has a floor made with a brighter color, red, blue and green. Going for a bit of a Hero Quest vibe on them and breaking up the grey in grey.

Youtube and twitch
As something new, I want to make at least a hobby stream every week. I'll be streaming through the Twitch platform as it has fairly straight forward software. Please help by going in there and following the channel.

Every live stream will be edited and cut into a youtube video - so I'll slowly be building up some terrain building content. Here's the first one (missing a bit at the start and end from technical difficulties).

Also consider following the youtube channel.

What's next?
Next step is to add spot colors on the stone details. Make sure to pick out arch ways, door ways and stone details in the wall. And then everything needs a layer of brown wash. But that'll be in the next blog post.

Dungeon Saga: Mortibis Legendary Necromancer

Playing through the core game and first expansion of Dungeon Saga will let the villian become powerful as well. Mantic have released a nice metal model for this guy, I really like him. The model has a really nice Diablo Necromancer vibe going for him.

Painted him like the non-legendary version, same colour scheme. Could also see myself using this pair as wizard and apprentice in Frostgrave.

Dungeon Saga: Legendary Heroes of Dolgorath

In Dungeon Saga the heroes become Legendary through the course of the campaign. Mantic have released Legendary versions of all the heroes - bigger, badder, broader metal versions of the plastic heroes.

I got a set, way back in the day, when I preordered Dungeon Saga - when it first came up for retail sale. My set of legendary heroes, I've painted in the same colours as the original miniatures.

The Orlaf version is my favourite, such a brute! I like how all the gear from the orignal models is carried by the legendary version. The way he's carrying his old two handen axe in a single hand. Very nice model, will also serve as a barbarian captain in Frostgrave.

I like the look of legendary Rordin, but the model is actually really tall. He's as tall as most human 28mm models. I've added some gold to this version, to better show his status.

Madriga is a cool ranger model in the orignal, but the legendary version is even cooler. I like the bigger armor and her pose is super cool. I've added a bowstring to the model, as I always do to bows.

Danor is the model with the weirdest legendary version. The campaign with the heroes is one long quest, but it doesn't take the amount of years for such a beard to grow. The wizard model is super cool though. I've added a greenstuff beard to the original Danor model, to make the leap between the models smaller.

Dungeon Saga: Hoggar and Zombie Trolls

The zombie trolls are some real big models and have a nice pose. I actually hot water bend one of them to hold the stone with both hands, but he's bend back over time. I'll do it again with the Return of Valendor troll, but will hold it in place with super glue then.

Hoggar is nice as well. You don't see zombie troll shamans that often - or living troll shamans for that matter. Reminds me a bit obout that skeleton without a jaw from an old Playstation game.

These were some of the first models I painted using The Army Painter method. But I base coated them in red and painted necrotic flest around the wounds and gashes. ... So it didn't really save any time at all.

I'm also using these Dungeon Saga models for the Thaw of the Lich Lord expansion for Frostgrave.

Dungen Saga: Elshara the Elven Banshee and ghosts

Elshara is a very nice banshee miniature, has the right feel to it. Reminds me of the description of the Dark Elf ghost in Dragonlance Chronicles. She's in agony.

The ghost are real classical. Ball and chain - couldn't be more traditional horror story.

Quick paintjobs. The banshee was base coated green and drybrushed with luminescent paint from Vallejo. The ghost are grey and black, with the same luminescent gren on the inside. The semi glowing effect is hard to capture with the camera.

Based like my other Dungeon Saga miniatures. Differenct greys and brown on the cobble stone. Birch tree seed leaves, some green and brown tufts.

The Ghost models will also serve as Frostwraiths in Frostgrave. As they frostwraith are not immaterial and these model look more that.

Dungeon Saga: Dwarf Revenants and Grund

There's nothing but cool about the undead dwarf models in Dungeon Saga, we see this way to little. The models reminds me of those very old undead Dogs of War from Warhammer.

I did a little reposing on one axe arm with hot water. I tiny conversion, but easy to do. As always I went with different colours on these guys.

Grund is such a lovely model. It's a well designed model to look regal as a dwarf king, while being undead.

Dungeon Saga: Skeletons

The Dungeon Saga skeletons have a very classic feel. Very thin sculpts though, not too strong. I've added some bow strings to the bows, as I always do.

For these skeletons I wanted to test the Army Painter dip to it's maximum and I decided to not even paint the bone parts of the models. This is just the bone coloured with dip straight on - it works surprisingly well. I won't do it again though, it's just a bit too easy. But after dip and matt varnish the plastic looks painted.

Dungeon Saga: Zombies and Armoured Zombies

Here's my zombies for Dungeon Saga. I especially like the armoured zombies, those are not seen often in games. I've done some quick reposing of the zombie arms with hot water. For variety I went with very different colours on their clothing.

These guys will also see action in Frostgrave games.

Frostgrave: Zombies

My collection of zombies from Frostgrave. I'm simply using my models from Dungeon Saga and Hero Quest. I mostly put the Hero Quest models on the table, because those old sculpts are so lovely!

The stone basing on the Hero Quest models are done with pieces of plastic cards. It adds a lot to those old models.

Dungeon Saga: Mortibis the Necromancer

Main bad guy in the core game of Dungeon Saga. Mortibis the Necromancer. I've went with purple, as I've already painted up a few cultists for Frostgrave in the same colours. So he'll see use in that game as a necromancer apprentice as well (his legendary version will be the wizard).

Dungeon Saga: Core Games Heroes

The four classic hero types for a dungeon crawler. A dwarf, a barbarian, a wizard and an elf.

I like how Mantic made the elf a girl. Not enough female characters out there.

The models are some decent sculpts, a bit on the thin side for my taste. Done in a time where Mantic were doing more true 28mm, opposed to their 32mm bulky sculpts now.

I've gone for four different colours, to make the heroes stand more out. I've also (as I always do) added a bowstring to the elf.

Frostgrave: Skeletons

My collection of skeletons is from all manner of games. But I'm using both Hero Quest and Dungeon Saga skeleteons. Haven't snowed these bases, as that would look out of place in their dungeons.

But the tufts I use and the leaves (birch tree seed) is common for both winter and dungeon bases.

I've also painted up some Loka (fantasy chess by Mantic Games) skeletons. Their fur boots and fur loincloths give them a nice Felstadt feel.

And this two skeletons is the highest needed on the random encounter tables for Thaw of the Lich Lord and core Frostgrave.

Check out my other Frostgrave Beastiary.
