Terrain: Broken and rusted cars

I've been wanting som all wasted, completely rusted and trashed cars for my wasteland tables. I think something like this will look better on a Scrappers or This Is Not A Test table, than my other cars - who as just dirty.

These were done at the end of a month, after I finished the monthly painting pledge. First I tried lighting the cars on fire with zippo lighter gasoline, but it didn't work. I think I might work dropping the cars into a bon fire - I'll try that at some point.

So I instead beat them with a hammer and painted all manner of different browns and rust colors I had. Gave them a Quick Varnish dip wash, birch tree seeds and then a mat varnish coat.

Super quick way to up add some cover to a complete wasteland.

Tutorial: Jersey Barriers

Been wanting some jersey barriers for a good while, thinking they'll add a lot to many different games.

Other pages:
Modern Terrain Hub
Walking Dead
Deadzone

Materials

  • Hard foam (mine is from a PC box)
  • Knife
  • Plier

Cut out some strips of foam. I've gone for 1" high barriers. The foam is 2 cm thick.

Cut them into short pieces.

Get a new and an sharp hobby knife. Cutting from the top and down, cut an angle on each side of the foam. I found up - down was better than side - side. The side - side result got jacked.

Cut and angle at the end of the barriers as well.

I decided to make some battle damage in half my jersey barriers. Using a plier you can rip out small chunks of the foam.

A small amount of time later and you'll have a good amount of barriers.

Painting
I spray painted the barriers with a cheap dark grey and drybrushed with a lighter grey. Added small yellow stripes for some extra detail. Printed some small posters and stuck on a few barriers and added a bit of blood spatter.

TWD: Wave 4 retail exclusives

It's been a very long time since all the kickstarter The Walking Dead models came. Now I've finished painting up the retail exclusives for wave 4 - Made To Suffer. I think the idea behind retail exclusives is brilliant, keeps the game fresh for Kickstarter backers.

The Walkers
Each of the walkers from the boosters are from a perk on the kickstarter campaign - pay a lot of money and get turned into a walker. I decided to paint one of the up to match my prisoner walkers, feeling I was missing a bit for the prison yard.

Tyreese and Michonne - riot gear
I really like the riot gear sculpts Mantic have done. And the complete set with Rick and Glenn is badass. It'll cost a lot of points in the game though.

Woodbury - the remaining guys
The last of the gang from Woodbury and the forces of The Governor.
I think Tom is one of the coolest models yet for this game, the model is oozing action. I'll be using it a lot, it's such a great pose. And it's also good to finally have Lilly in the collection, she's playing a pretty important role in the story.

Terrain: A few toy cars

After getting so many new buildings for the city setup - Modern Terrain Hub - I needed some more cars for the streets. Found some right sized vehicles at a flea market (one was broken from the start).  Really easy to make ready for gaming.

Give the car a layer of Quick Varnish from Army Painter. Give light spray of brown from a long 60cm distance - adds a dusty and dirty look. Add a few birch tree seeds with super glue.

Here are two of the cars next to a Mantic Games Walking Dead car. It's a nice fit.

Modern Corpse Markers

I've been wanting some corpse markers for my modern games. When I last made an order from TT Combat I was thinking of getting their resin ones. But as always I'm easily put off by price - thinking 'this is the same as a small building'. I also really dislike the brittle nature of even good resin.

From some late night Ebay search a large box of Studio Miniatures zombies. They are dirt cheap and come in a box of 60. They are some fairly boring sculpts (unlike the Studio Miniature metal models).

I've used some of those and a single Warlord female survivor to make some corpses.

There's four different bodies on the plastic sprue, so I decided to go for 8 corpses, half being face up - half being face down. There's eight different heads, so I used one of each.

Using clippers I added various injuries to the bodies. Clipping off limbs and messing up the cut areas even more.

To make the models stronger, prevent breaking, I've glued them to the thinnest plastic card I have - to look like blood pools.

This was an easy little project that will add Last Days: Massacre Site and my games of Walking Dead.
Showcase and painting
The corpses were painting in simple colors, blood pools painted red. They were given a heavy wash of quick shade. Lastly I used the technical Blood For The Blood God to add shiny fresh blood.

First three corpses. The female one is from Warlord Games.

All these are studio plastics. Made sure to make a doctor / nurse, painted with a simple red cross on the shoulders. I have used the same uniform for both alive survivors and some nurse  walkers. Allowing a better themed setup.

The yellow vehicles with blue triangles are the colors of an emergency agency in Denmark. Made one corpse in the uniform of these guys as well. I still need a few walking zombies in these uniform colors.

Last corpse is painted in US woodland camouflage pattern. It's the same colors I've used on my infantry squad.

Last Days: First crew - Everyday Heroes

After finishing The Thaw of the Lich Lord for Frostgrave, my regular gaming body and I will jump into Last Days: Zombie Apocalypse.

This is the first crew  I'm gonna play, regular good guys. Everyday heroes.

We're gonna play with a random refuge, roll a dice to see which safe haven the crew have been able to find. I rolled up a church.

I'll describe the bits used, items in game and character stories under the photos. I've gone with WYSIWYG on all their starting gear.

The crew

Everyday Hero, selfless - Wade
The leader of the group, the everyday hero. Wade, like many other young men and women, did a few years in the army when he was young. He never thought off it as a carrier thing. After leaving the army, he got a job at the state. Working with social services, mostly desk work. He's always enjoyed spending his free time outside.

After grouping with John and Sam, the three were roaming blindly for a time. They found a place with Job at his church.

Starting gear: Surplus SMG and knife

Parts: Warlord Project Z survivors, Modern Military head, converted arm from male survivor bits.
SWAT, trained - John
John and Wade made back in their army days. They were from the same state and became good friends. John loved being a soldier and did spend a few more years in the Army than Wade. He was on a couple combat deployments. After leaving the army, civilian life didn't work for him in the beginning. But after he became a cop and later part of SWAT everything fell into place.

Until the world ended that is.

Painting: Really hard to capture the different colors. His suit is dark blue, his gear is black with dark grey highlights, there's som spot color on his yellow safety glasses and the green machete.

Starting equipment: Military Assault Rifle, Heavy Blade (Machete).

Parts: Warlord Modern Military, Project Z survivors machete.

Firefighter, selfless - Sam
Sam was working as a fireman when all hell broke loose. Working countless hours, skipping breaks, never going home - as most firemen did in the beginning. Sam continued working even as the others bailed.
Everything finally fell apart during a major deployment. Cut off and surrounded be zombies he found himself fighting alongside John. Free of the mayhem, they met up with Wade.

Painting: Went for the classic yellow and blue combo. Painted some black knee pads on the pants. Can't be spotted for shine, but there's a minor 'FD' on the front of his shirt as well.

Starting Equipment: Heavy club (fire axe), pump-action shotgun

Parts: Warlord Project Z survivor. Chopped off t-shirt sleeve of right arm. Fire Axe made from thin plastic card and plastic rod.
Good Samaritan, selfless - Father Job
Father Job is a priest and has been so for many years. When all hell broke loose he was a week from retirement. First he found himself lucky, in the bad situation, still being in charge of the church and starting to organize helping from there.

He was surprised however how few people came to the church however. He was sure they would have been filled with people.

When Wade came to the church, he quickly became the leader. Job still runs the church, but Wade is a better organizer and leader - making all the decisions when going out.

Painting: Nearly all black, when a few dark grey highlights. a white collar and metal on the shotgun breaks it all up.

Starting equipment: Pump-action shotgun, knife, medical supplies and a bible.

Parts: Warlord project Z survivor, bible arm has been bend with hot water. Shotgun arm from Modern Military sprue, with shoulder pocket cut off.
 Rescue Worker, selffless - Carla
Carla is a nurse and married to Father Job. When society broke down she worked for a bit at the hospital - but it quickly became chaotic. Feeling her skills better used elsewhere, she stocked up on supplies to help the community from the church.

Starting equipment: Automatic pistol, knife, medical supplies

 Kid, neutral - Alice
Alice and her parents belonged to the church before the apocalypse. Not going every Sunday, but occasionally. After her parents died, Alice first went to the houses of friends - all abandoned. She made it through the city to seek help at her school - which had fallen to zombies as well. Finally she went to the church where Father Job and Carla took her in.

Starting equipment: Knife
 The Refuge - Church
Rolling for a random refuge, it was fitting my characters nicely to find a church. The group was already figured out be then - so that was a great roll. Here's a few shots of the survivors in their home, refitted to work better for them.
