TNT: Pest Control 1

During the summer break I got a few good games of TNT played with old friend. People who haven't tried the game before and haven't played miniature games in years. System is really quick to show people and we got great games still.

First game played was the Pest Control scenario from the core book. The battle was between

S.t.a.l.k.e.r.s: New warband, lots of gun, few melee, no relics from the start.

Peace Keepers: A few games of experience, but have had loses - so are pretty much at ground zero still.

Setting
A local watering hole have been overrun by rad zombies and irradiator zombies. A vast network of old sewers have been infested. The local population have been run off and is paying for anyone willing to clean the area.

Drone video from the setup of the game. All terrain featured have articles here.

Both warbands set up for a quick clean up. Get in, shoot down all the zombies and blow their nests into pieces. Should be pretty straight forward as long as the spawn rate didn't become too high.

There was a few zombies placed a each of the four spawn points from the start og the scenario.

The residents didn't even have time to close up the bar properly before evacuating the area.

Entrance to the Water Bar. The name suddently seems quite fitting.

Knowing that time would only bring more zombies onto the board, both teams rushed forward towards the bar. No time getting in postion, setting up good firing lines. Fire and maneuver.

Stalkers moving towards the bar staying in cover between some old junk piles.

The main group of stalkers getting in close. Staying in tight formation to not get swarmed in melee by zombies.

Both group failed in bringing down enough zombies in turn one. Both teams hit them allright but simply couldn't bring them down.

Even though Irradiators (tough zombies) only come on a 1 in 6 chance, the started coming. And we kept rolling large amounts of zombies and irradiators through the game.

Having a few sacrificial lambs on the peace keeper team, this became their lot from the start. All out speed, trying to get in and kill off zombies. Shooters moving in behind them. ... they just couldn't kill the zombies.

The large group of stalkers weren't doing much better. More zombies were getting to the group than they were able to kill off.

More freaking irradiator zombies popping out from the sewers.

My team of peace keepers got in trouble as well. Despite having multible guns, they just didn't die and soon my scout was getting swarmed.

It's a tough situation when the living fall as quickly as the dead.

I decided to send this sacrificial lamb on a suicide mission. Get to the nest and blow it up (along with himself).

Through out the game we constantly rolled above average numbers of walkers to enter the table.

Never ending swarm!

Not even the highly explosion prisoner managed to take down many zombies or the nest itself. After this point in the game both teams tried to escape with whatever they had left. Get off the board before the zombies captured us.

Here's a fly over from the end of the game. Lots of zombies on the board, very few stalkers or peace keepers left.

This was a very nice game and it was exciting through it all. With a bit more experience (or bigger) warbands and with better luck with the zombies, we could have cleaned the board. Not this time however - that bar is lost.

The stalkers did get an amazing amount of loot from the game however. They found a plasma gun for their leader, a minigun for the up-armed soldier and enough money to by a new elite trooper.

My own peace keepers didn't find quite as much loot, but in the end they were able to afford a tactical with a light machine gun - so happy days!

Ghost Archipelago: Spiders and Flies

I freaking hate fantasy spdiers - and they are always in the games! I've hated them every since playing the first Baldurs Gate. For Ghost Archipelago and Rangers of Shadowdeep you need spiders. I've already made spiders for Frostgrave, but their bases are wrong (snow of dungeon).

Found some spider toys, glued their soft legs to some sticks, sprayed black, drybrushed some grey and added brown flock as nasty hair.

They turned out good, as they cost nothing. Might add some spider web to the branches as well, that would add to the horror.

These giant flies have been used by many other hobbyists already. They are halloween decor, come painted. I've just added some wire to them, and stock two to a base. The flies is counting as Giant Wasps in Ghost Archipelago and flies in Rangers of Shadow Deep.

This was a good little investment as I also need flies for This Is Not A Test - will make other bases for those guys. Might also use some if I ever go back to work on Nurgle stuff.

TNT: Nuka Cola Scatter

I've been having this idea about playing a game of TNT in an old Nuka Cola factory. And twisting the intro game where you have to collect water "Tanks for Nothing" - to nuka cola instead.

I got my hands on some cool 3d printed vending machines from Thingiverse and then went hunting for other bits in the garage.

This billboard is a print I found with Google. There's a step-by-step for the billboard build here.

This is a generator from Mantics line of Battlezone terrain. I got a couple of these from way back when the did Deadzone 2nd edition.
3d printed vending machines.

The grafitti is made with wet acryllic Posca markers. A set is a bit on the pricey side (compared to what I usually work with), but perfect for making grafitti on terrain.

This is part of a tractor toy I got for free at a thrift store. Might even make a couple more of these, as it was a couple minutes worth of work.

Resin barrels and beer cannisters are from Ramshackle Games and cost only a little. There would be a maximum of 9 tokens in the scenario at one time, so that's the amount I went for. In other games they'll just be scatter pieces.

TNT: Irradiator Zombies

Another bestiary entry for TNT - the Irradiator Zombies. These zombies are tougher than the regular Rad Zombies. And they have a mighty high chance of messing up your survivors.

I made six of these zombies for a specific scenario in mind. And I was happy to see five of them hit the table at the same time.

For these I've mixed Warlord Games zombies and Studio Miniature zombie bits. The barrels on each base are simply super glue lids. I put a lot of contact glue next to the barrels, for a nice goo effect.

The zombie skin was painted green and the entire models were given a layer of Quick Shade from Army Painter. After matt varnish, I painted the skin and clothes (next to skin) with a flourescent green from Vallejo. The slime on the base was painted with Nurgles Rot from GW.

And here's the entire zombie hoard. With both Irradiators and Rads. The tougher irradiators stand out nicely among the regular ones.

Ghost Archipelago: Swamp Trolls

This is my attempt at doing some Swamp trolls for Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago. I've made these models from some old Mantic Plague Stage 2 Leapers. Old restic models from Deadzone. I've added some GW River Troll heads and tails to the models - that I got free from a trade.

This was a quick paint with a green base coat, some different drybrushes and wash. After painting I've added green flock and washed it with green, for some swampy overgrowth.

I'm very happy with the result on these and I got to use some miniatures that's been living in a box for a lot of years. As I aæready have enough Stage 2 models for Deadzone.

Tutorial: Billboards

I had a friend over for a game of This Is Not A Test - and he commented on the lack of color on my boards. Pretty much all my post apocalypse terrain are nuances of brown and grey. A few spot colors would be good to add.

And since I've been wanting to make some billboards for some time, this seemed like the perfect time. Billboards will add a lot of detail to my concrete apartment blocks easy.

This is a pretty easy build.

Materials
  • Printed paper billboards.
  • Plastic sprue
  • Cardboard
  • PVA and superglue
Step 1
Find some nice billboards and print them out. I found two Fallout ones with cool detail weathering on the file. And then I photocopied to nice photos from the TNT rulebook that I wanted on the board.

Brush some pva glue on a piece of cardboard and glue the prints on. Make sure it's completely dry before you cut these out.

Step 2 - Sprue
Find your box of plastic sprue (that all hobbyists should have). Find some fitting fairly well on the back on your billboard prints. No need to glue a frame, I found some fitting sprue easy. Just cut off all the small spiky bits.

I want some platforms on mine as well. So i found some narrow sprue pieces (possibly held shields back in the day).

Glue the frames to a base and add some sand.

Step 3: Base coat

Using some cheap spray paints. I painted the frame grey and while it was wet, gave it a few sprays of brown as well.  Spray the back of the billboard prints as well.

Step 4: Assemble

Glue the billboards on the frames. Add some platform with ice cream sticks or coffee stirrers. I haven't painted mine, because the varnish will color it enough.

I've just given the pieces a layer of Army Painter quick shade. Frame and wood. Gave the edges of the billboard some as well, adding a weathered look.

All done!
And here's the finished billboards. A super quick build that adds a lot to the board. Good color, some LOS blocking, a few higher positions for firing models.
