RoSD: The Discord Lockdown Cam Crew

[This blogpost was written long ago and never posted. It's from way back in Covid times.]

... Covid lockdown was hard. Long and terrible. It's been absolutely killing my motivation for doing the miniature hobby, as it's the social aspect that motivates me. It's always the next game / play date that motivates me to actually do terrain building and painting.

I tried the solo game / streaming thing to motivate myself, but it wasn't the same. So I decided to play a few games of RoSD with some friends from old. I play some PC games with them, but non of them are in the miniature hobby anymore.

It worked well and was a nice day of gaming. We played through The Missing mission with some new Rangers. They made concepts and I picked out and painted some models to fit it.

Macho 300 melee guy
"Make me a full testosterone warrior, like in 300!". Done. Build from a Oathmark human with some added GW marauder bits. This is a grizzled veteran fighter, seen enough combat to not care about apperances.

Painted him in my city guard colors, so he can one day join a unit of spearmen in Oathmark.

A simple recruit made from a Perry Miniatures model with some bits. Also works as a puny city guardsman.

Classic ranger
Decided to build a more classic ranger for myself. Bow, two-handed sword on the back. Made from an Oathmark human and some different elf bits.

My guy is also bringing a simple city guard, drafted from a nearby town to help the crew. Model is a Perry Miniature with oathmark goblin ax and GW elven shield.

Arcane Crossbowman
"Build me an arcane crossbowman. A bit of magic, crossbow, ranger looking type. And his bodyguard psycho!" Made this dude from a Frostgrave cultist, GW elf head and some other bit box bits.

The psycho bodyguard is a Frostgrave cultist head, added to an Oathmark goblin body and some GW lizardmen skink arms.

Druid
"I want to be a nature loving, tree hugging druid". Made from Frostgrave female soldier with a bit of elven bits added and some cool forest base - don't know where that is from.

Anyways the player decided to ditch this character just before the game and went with a classic barbarian instead. So picked out my savage from Ghost Archipelago for that.

The games

Not gonna write any report on the games, it was great fun and the scenarios were hard enough to play through. But no focus on taking photos and such. So here's just a few quick shots from the games.

You can find blog posts on most of the terrain here.

Nightwatch: Watchers and retinue

Nightwatch is a cool little solo/coop fantasy game based on the Hardwired mechanics. But the game is written for campaigns or hunts - 7 linked scenarios. I'm gonna start playing the intro campaign, hunting for Malicus Crane an evil necromancer.

The group for that hun is described in the book, and I've gone for those models.

Guild of Blades

This guy is made to look big and intimidating. I've used an old Games Workshop bretonia men-at-arms body and given him a marauder helmet. His axe is from an old dwarf model and the shield is... I don't now. There's an orc skull on it, leather on the front and it 'knight' shaped. Looked cool filled with trophies.

Guild of Mancers
The story behind is that like The Witcher series, she appointed to a court as an adviser. This being a small city in the kingdom of Lorenthia (from RoSD) pre-Shadow Deep invasion. It's her that's called the rest of the Nightwatch into action. She's also the one who's drafted the retinue soldiers for the hunt.

The model is Eva Eilhart from Dunkeldorf, gave here a Frostgrave female head, a scroll and skull (being a mancer) and use a torch flame as a fire spell. He meal hand was easy to bend into shape.

Guild of Alchymists

Another kitbash hero. Mancers are also fighters, so he's armed with a sword and dagger. I used a frostgrave cultist body, GW empire militia arms and an old state trooper head. Then I found different bits with puches, flasks and some round ones - that looks just like grenados. I think this guy looks like a fighter alchemist.

Guild of Rangers
I think this guy is another frostgrave cultist, maybe he's a ghost archipelago crewman. I'm not entirely sure. The head is from an GW men-at-arms and the arms are from the Empire militia kit. The quiver is from old GW goblins and then he has some pouches, a dead rabbit and a sword in the belt.

 Retinue

These are the Lorenthian soldiers, part of the city guard in the town where the Mancer is stationed. She's drafted a few soliders into joining the hunt and helping the Nightwatchers.

First up is a crossbowman build entirely from FG soldiers kit.

This soldier is a complete soldiers build as well, though I'm not sure where the shield is from. I liked the lantern, giving a nice city guard vibe, hunting some thief through the streets.

This spearmen is my favorite models of the entire bunch. I really like the pose I've gotten for him. He looks just like some guard sleeping at a city gate, not really caring about anything. The miniatures is a Northstar Oathmark human, given a GW high elf spear and an Empire militia helmet.

I think you should check out some of Patrick Todoroffs games. Each of the games are truly excellent and most can be found right here on Wargames Vault.

Sludge - the beginning

Right... most of my hobby time this past year have gone into Guilders: A Life In Shadows. Writing, modelling, playing.

Some of the guys over on the Discord are getting into Sludge. And I really don't need to paint a lot of miniatures or a new game. But they talked me into building a board for Sludge at Horisont Con 2023. ... and then I found myself with three plastic kits and getting into Sludge. Oh well.

Sludge is a dark fantasy medieval / napolionics / ww1 mix. Lovely grimey look on it all and fairly open to interpretation. You can get it in Blaster 4 - right here.

I've bought Wargames Atlantic WW1 french, Perry Miniatures Footknights and Agincourt Mounted Knights. That will make up my army alongside bits already at hand.

Jäger
The first squad I build was Jägers. Made with some leftover Perry Miniatures, European Mercenaries, and some WGA french rifles. Gave them machetes as the unit has muskets and melee weapons. Added feathers to their hats (Jägers have to climb a tree and steal them from a Roc).

Cloaks
All my miniatures in the army are gonna have ragged cloaks and ponchos, to fantasy up the ww1 miniatures. It's just ripped up toilet paper and super glue. Really easy to do and looks great. The last photos show them off better.

Chaplain and bodyguards
Next up I made a chaplain and some bodyguards. I have no idea about what the do in the game. But I found three old bretoninia miniatures in the bit box. Since these are not soldiers I greenstuffed some tubes for their breathers.

This is true bitbox mania, with old empire militia two-handed sword, a gnoll from frostgrave two handed sword, frostgrave cultist heads, wga french backpacks, warhammer flagalant head, elf mage book. All manner of stuff.

Line Infantry
My line infantry will be almost all made up from WGA french soldiers from ww1. It's the paiting that will make them look fantasy styled and not modern military. Also the toilet paper cloaks really add a lot to the Sludge look on the miniatures.

The drummers and banner bearers (right now just a pole arm) are bit box conversions. Perry Miniature pikes. Warhammer drums, paper strap, hand with drumsticks are different arrow wielding arms cut into shape.

These will get a sergent on the bases, but I'm missing a few bits (other kits in the mail) for those guys.

A better look at the cloaks

And the army as it stands right now after two days of building.
